Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge

Situated on the Big Mineral Arm of Lake Texoma just southwest of Pottsboro,Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge is open from dawn to dusk 365 days a year. There is no admission fee. The Visitor Center is open Monday through Friday 7:30 am – 4 pm. On weekends, volunteers staff the Visitor Center from 9 – 4 pm on Saturday and 1 – 5 pm on Sunday. The Visitor Center is closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

One of the best ways to see wildlife at Hagerman Refuge is to take the Wildlife Drive. Using your vehicle as “camouflage” is the best way to view the most wildlife. But first, be sure to stop at the Visitor Center to pick up a map and other literature. Guides to common birds, wildlife, and flowers are available along with pamphlets on each of the hiking trails. A new Tram has been donated for wildlife tours.

Free guided wildlife tours along Wildlife Drive on open air, all-electric tram, several times weekly, weather permitting; donations accepted.  Fall shorebird migration begins this month. Bring camera, binoculars or borrow our loaner binos.  Check friendsofhagerman.com/Activities for monthly tour schedules.

Youth FIRST is the monthly program for children at Hagerman NWR, with activities for ages 4 – 7 and ages 8 – 12.  You can register youth online, http://www.friendsofhagerman.com/Youth or by phoning the Refuge, 903 786 2826. Lots of hands-on nature learning and fun! Parent or other responsible adult must accompany children age 6 and younger. Free. 10 – 11:30 am.  At the Visitor Center

Second Saturday is a monthly nature program series held 10 – 11:30 am, in the Visitor Center at the Refuge.  Free, open to the public, no reservations needed.

Birds top the wildlife attractions at the 11,320 acre Refuge with 339 species recorded since its establishment in 1946.  Although they take top billing for many people, birds are not the only attraction. Bottomland hardwoods along the creeks attract a variety of wildlife.  Watch for white-tailed deer or raccoon with their young in the summer. Armadillos, turtles, and river otters are here, too! Listen for the howl of coyotes or call of the great-horned owl at dusk.

Look for wading birds, white-tailed deer, or bobcats along the four mile Wildlife Drive. Interpretive signs along the way will help you identify some of the wildlife you see. Hike on one of five hiking trails to explore Refuge forests, see what critters are feeding at back country ponds, or look for tracks of deer and river otter along beautiful Lake Texoma.

There is always something fun to do at the refuge – hike, fish, observe and photograph wildlife, or hunt during one of the seasons for small game or deer.
