Enjoy a stroll through the Butterfly Garden at HNWR, with docents on hand to help you identify the butterflies, native Texas plants, and the connections between them! Free, come and go or come and stay. Cameras are welcome! And – we have close-range binoculars for loan that help you really SEE the butterflies and other insect wildlife. Docents also have some garden-fun activities for families with children.

Second Saturday – Warblers

Saturday, April 8, 2017, 10:00am – 11:30am

Dr. Wayne Meyer, Associate Professor of Biology at Austin College will present a talk on Warblers at this free nature program. Warblers are some of the smallest birds found on the North American continent, but are known for their long migrations, traveling from South America and the West Indies, to the northern regions of Canada and back again. Hear how to ID these elusive little birds, and which ones we might see in N. Texas.

The Refuge Rocks – Eggzactly – For Ages 4 – 12

Saturday, April 15, 2017, 10:00am – 11:30am

Think of the great variety of shapes, colors, numbers, habitats and patterns of a variety of egg producing animals, as well as the miracle of life within the egg. Learn how color and markings on eggs help camouflage them to stay them hidden from predators. Please register each child separately, and note deadline, 4 pm, April 13. Parents must stay with children ages 4 – 7 and may accompany youngsters in the 8 – 12 age group (optional).

Tram Tours

All aboard the all-electric Carlos and Eulalia Cardinal Express for a 60 – 90-minute tour along Wildlife Drive at the Refuge.  Free (donations accepted). Guided tours offered at 2 pm on Saturdays and Sundays,  weather permitting.  Call (903) 786 2826 for reservations, limited seating.  Standbys accepted on weekends if space permits.  Please note – volunteers cannot access messages on Refuge phone system, to make a reservation or to cancel, please speak to a volunteer 9 am – 4 pm MondaySaturday or 1 – 5 pm on Sundays, thank you. And sorry, no dogs other than service animals allowed on board the tram.
