Learn to Sail
Curious about learning more about sailing? We have sailing programs for folks of all skill levels and desires. We offer a Discovery Sail to get you out on a sailboat and see what it’s all about and we have more structured courses that will teach you to be a confident and proficient sailor. If you’re a little rusty and just need a refresher, we can help with that too.

A perfect introduction into sailing. Our Discovery Sail is a 90 minute sail experience around Lake texoma for those wishing to experience sailing for the first time or simply enjoy tacking around Lake Texoma. We take a group of 1-4 people and give a simple introduction to the basics of sailing to enhance their appreciation of the sport and enjoy the thrill of sailing.
All Sailing Cruises depart from Lighthouse Marina Charter Dock at 300 Lighthouse Drive, Pottsboro, TX 75076. Please arrive 15 minutes early to meet the captain and prepare for your voyage.
What a great way to get some time on the water! Your Captain is an experienced sailor & can answer your questions about sailing. You won’t be out on the water too long. This is a two-hour, fun sailing event. This introductory course is designed to expose you to the fun of sailing while you learn about the sport.
Topics include: Basic Sailing Terminology, How Sailboats Sail, Different Points of Sail, Simple Crew Coordination, Maybe a Basic Knot or two, Safety Equipment, FUN!
Course Length: Total of 2 hours. 10-15 minutes classroom, remainder on-the-water.
Bitten by the sailing bug? Our Basic Sailing course is the beginning to your path towards becoming a confident, knowledgeable and proficient sailor. This 4 hour class offers plenty of hands on time and will provide you the basic fundamentals and concepts of what sailing a boat is all about.
Topics include: Sailing Fundamentals, Basic Seamanship and COLREGS, Man Overboard (MOB) Procedures, Boat Handling, Sailing Knots.
Course Length: Total of 4 hours. 30-60 minutes classroom/at-the-dock training, remainder on-the-water.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Sailing
Ready to sail on your own? After you’ve complete Basic Sailing Part I you may schedule time in 2 hour blocks to further your knowledge and on-the-water experience with one of our trained captains. We gear this course towards your desires as a skipper, whether boat ownership is in your future, or you are working towards being a confident crew member or captain one day.
Topics include: Sail Trim, Sailing Techniques, Trip Planning, Your choice of special emphasis areas.
Course Length: 2 hr lesson blocks.
ESCAPE – INDULGE – RELAX
We typically leave the dock at 1 hour before sunset and return 30 minutes after, depending on the time of year the times may vary. The itinerary is yours to create but our most popular is sailing, drinking/eating and sailing. After that we stop the boat and drift as the sun sets. Food and non-alcoholic beverages are included in the charter, our menu varies but typically includes mixed skewers, shrimp stuffed avocados with pita chips, and a dessert. We are able to offer substitutes upon request. Our beverages are water, coke, diet coke, and sprite. You and your guests are more than welcome to bring anything else you would like and we will be happy to serve it for you.
