Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site located in Bonham, Texas

The Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site offers a more intimate glimpse into the life of Speaker Sam Rayburn . The twelve-room home built in 1916 still gives the feeling that Mr. Sam or other family members have just stepped out and will return shortly. After extensive renovations in 2012, Visitors will enjoy an entirely new experience with new digital features and restored treasures.  A new resource has been created – the archives explorer – which enables visitors to interact with Rayburn’s papers through a digital touchscreen interface.

The Sam Rayburn Home museum is located in a two –story home built in 1916 on a 121-acre farm just west of Bonham. “Mr. Sam” Rayburn served in the Texas house of Representatives and the U.S.S. Congress and eventually became speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. He served as Speaker of the House for 17 non-consecutive terms between 1940 until his death in 1961.

Visitors can explore Rayburn’s personal life and political achievements and their impact on mid-20th-century history. The home contains all original Rayburn family furnishings. In addition, the grounds include Rayburn’s 1947 Cadillac, a historic smokehouse, vegetable garden, barn and garage.  The home is a National Historic Landmark, a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
