Hospital Sketches by Louisa May Alcott – Nurses & the Civil War
08/16/2018 @ 6:00 PM - 08/17/2018 @ 7:00 PM
Dr. Randi Tanglen from Austin College presents “Hospital Sketches by Louisa May Alcott: Volunteer Nurses and the Civil War”. Description: Before she became the famous author of Little Women, Louisa May Alcott was a volunteer nurse for the Union Army during the Civil War. She worked at a hospital outside Washington, D.C. and tended the wounded from the Battle of Fredericksburg. She eventually contracted typhoid fever and experienced the hospital both as a nurse and a patient. Alcott published her letters home to her family as a book called Hospital Sketches. Professor Randi Tanglen, English professor at Austin College, will provide an overview of Hospital Sketches and connect it to the Denison Public Library’s traveling exhibit from the National Library of Medicine.
