Donald Lee Mayes (1914-1966) was a leading architect in Denison and area towns. He designed commercial buildings, schools, banks, and more than 75 private residences, most in mid-century modern style. Mayes (DHS Class of 1931) graduated from the University of Texas Architecture School in 1936. Mayes Elementary School is named after him.
