Denison’s newest art gallery, Sparrows Gallery, will offer fall art classes in a variety of mediums.  The classes will begin in September and last for 6 weeks.  Each class will meet one evening a week from 7 pm – 9 pm and one class on Saturday afternoon from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.  Cost for the 12 hours of course lessons is $300.00/course-materials included.  Each course meets on a different evening, so take 1 or 2 or all! Drawing Drawing & Pastels: taught by Jerry Hunsinger.

Jerry has been an artist for over fifty years!She has won National Best of Shows, won numerous national and regional shows, been published in Artist Magazine and Pastel Journal and taught for many years. Learning the basics of drawing (and more for those of you with experience) is critical as you progress to painting and other art forms.

Watercolors History & Use from basics to Abstract: taught by Barb Stewart.

Barbhas degrees from both the College of DuPage Glen Ellyn and a BFA from the School of Art Institute of Chicago. She has shown in numerous shows and currently teaches art in OK. She’ll teach the basics of this medium and for those of you with a background you’ll learn the difficult art of creating depth within the world of abstracts and much more!  Classes meet on Wednesdays starting September 14th

Mixed Media: taught by Michelle Anderson.

Michelle has sold over 3000 pieces of her art withher on-line presence. Having received a college scholarship for art from Art Center College of Design, CA she ended up a professional rescue diver for years until her love of art and diving melded and brought her back toher passion. These days her art is in Sparrows Gallery and she is the Director of the Sherman Arts Club for Children. Her classes are fun as you learn how to manipulate various mediums to create art you never would have thought of!  Classes meet on Fridays starting September 23rd.

Creativity: Finding & Keeping the Flow  taught by Tamie Beth.

Owner of Sparrows  Gallery and artist of 16+ years, Tamie has been a past trainer of adult education for 18 years. She taughtTeam Building, Time Management, Self-Discipline and more. As owner of the Compass Rose Brigantine Ship and Sparrows Gallery she’ll share her insights with you on unique ways to have a “real” life and still find and keep that creative spark. Ways to get in the flow and stay there! Don’t expect normal in a Tamie Beth class! Classes meet on Thursday evenings starting September 15th

Recycling, Upcycling- Making Art!: taught by Brandon Lashley.

3D Design/Sculpture Class structured around the use of recycled materials and found objects to create pieces of art. One of the main features of the class will be creating your own perpetual motion machine using Da Vinci’s design as inspiration. Brandon obtained his degree in Studio Art from Southeastern Oklahoma University 2005. His non-profit Environment & Cultural Arts Outreach (ECO) is the background for his fundamental belief that beauty can come from what is already around us, “Our throw-away society creates chaos. We need to learn to create from that instead!”  Classes meet Saturday afternoon from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. starting September 17th

Rick Lynn, Professor of Geology at Grayson College, will present a special DINO DAYS lecture on Saturday, July 23 at 11:00 am in the downstairs community room at the museum. The topic for the lecture will be the Geology of the Texoma area. The event is free to attend.

Professor Lynn will discuss the geological forces that have made the Texoma we recognize today. He will examine the sediments found in this area, what fossils can be found within them, and their geological age. He will also talk about how the topography of Texoma has changed over the years.

“Nobody knows the geology of this area better than Rick and we are delighted that he will be sharing his knowledge with us,” stated Dan Steelman, Executive Director at the museum. The lecture is free but regular admission rates will apply to those attendees who wish to view the “DINO DAYS” exhibit upstairs. DINO DAYS 3-D movies which are normally held in the community room at that hour will be preempted. The movie schedule will resume after the lecture event.

The Sherman Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm every Thursday through August 11, 2016. Admission is $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for seniors, $2.00 for students (ages 6 to17 and with college ID) and FREE for ages 5 and under and museum members. Discounts are available to groups of 10 or more.

Dino Days T RexThe Sherman Museum Dino Academy Registration Now Open

Registration is now open for The Sherman Museum DINO ACADEMY. The hands-on workshop for children ages 6 – 12 is intended to provide a fun, educational experience as part of the museums’ summer program DINO DAYS. The Academy will be held July 12, 13 and 14 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

“DINO ACADEMY gives the kids a fun opportunity to touch and feel the type of casts and fossils that paleontologists get to work with every day”, Executive Director, Dan Steelman stated. Participants will discuss a different topic daily. Tuesday will be “Monsters of the Deep”, Wednesday is “Prehistoric Skies” and Thursday is, “Giants of the Land”. Children are able to attend one day or all three. The cost will be $15.00 for one day, $25.00 for two days, and $40.00 for all three days. In addition to the educational aspect of DINO ACADEMY, the kids will work on a craft, watch a 3-D movie, dig for a Chasmosaurus skull and be given a tour of the DINO DAYS exhibit. A snack will be provided mid-morning.

Please call the museum at 903-893-7623 to register your child for DINO ACADEMY 2016. There will be 10 openings per day. Payment arrangements can be made at that time. Walk-ins will be welcome provided there is space available at that time. Parents are welcome to stay and attend with their child or they may drop them off and return to pick them up at noon. Identification will be required at pick up for those parents

The Sherman Museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Admission for DINO DAYS is $5.00 for ages 5 and up, FREE for children 4 and under and FREE for museum members.
