Austin College Serves the Community in Great Day of Service

On Saturday, November 7, the Austin College community will come together to take part in volunteer activities once again for the 19^th annual Great Day of Service. The theme for this year’s event is “Think Globally, Serve Locally.” Students will work at some 45 locations benefiting non-profits across the North Texas region. Each year, approximately 400 students take part in the volunteer effort that begins with a gathering to send the workers on their way. At that gathering, students bring canned goods that will be donated to Helping Hands Food Pantry.

Students are called to help with projects of all kinds. At Divine Equine Riding Center, students will do yard work and maintenance and help run a festival. At Grand Central Station, students will help organize food in the warehouse. That is just the beginning of the work. Students will work at Sherman Community Garden, interact with children at the Boys and Girl Club in Denison, help prepare for a book signing at Pottsboro Public Library, paint benches at Hagerman Wildlife Refuge, and play games with the elderly at area nursing homes. Similar projects are planned at 40 other sites.

“Service is part of our campus culture, and we are privileged to be able to share our time and energy with these many excellent organizations,” said President Marjorie Hass. “It is my hope that the work of our students will be beneficial far beyond this weekend.”

The College’s Service Station organizes the Great Day of Service event, which complements the “Great Days of Service” sponsored by area churches during the summer. Savannah Low, chair of the Service Station Board said, “Great Day of Service is an excellent opportunity for the college community to get together, as a whole, and serve our community. Sherman Museum will hold the 12th Annual Evening of Texana on November 5, 2015 at 6:30 pm in the museum’s downstairs community room. The public is invited to attend and admission is FREE. Donations will be accepted.

“Evening of Texana” celebrates our Texas culture. The readings are chock-full of the wit and wisdom of the Lone Star State. It’s a popular event, so I recommend you get here early for the best seat,” stated Executive Director Dan Steelman. The annual celebration of Texas culture features refreshments and spirits with a Texas flavor, and humorous selections from three Texas authors. Ginger Nye, John West and Margie Morris will perform the readings. Some of the material may not be appropriate for younger audiences.

The election on November 3, 2015 will give Sherman voters the opportunity to renew the Sherman Street Sales Tax Initiative which provides more than $1 million each year to fix Sherman’s roads. The tax is just 1/8 of a cent on purchases but it provides a full third of the city’s budget for street repairs. Since Sherman’s retail areas are a regional shopping center, more than half of the tax is paid for by those who reside outside the City of Sherman.

Renewal of the Sherman Street Sales Tax Initiative will provide funding for a major expansion of Loy lake Road, easing traffic headaches through the city’s major retail hub. Expansion of Loy Lake Road is expected to begin in early 2016.

In addition to widening Loy Lake Road between U.S. Highway 75 and U.S. Highway 82 from two lanes to four, the City of Sherman has more than 60 extra miles of road repairs planned if the tax is renewed on November 3, 2015.

The Sherman Street Sales Tax Initiative has funded the repair of more than 150 miles of streets, including several major thoroughfares through town.
