Lake Texoma striper fishing has really come alive this week with the arrival of spring. Big striper are on a feed frenzy getting ready to make their annual spring spawning run up the Washita and Red rivers.
As the shallow waters warm fish move up out of the river channel to feed on shad. The fish are on the move so anglers need to be persistent and stay on the move looking for active fish.
My bait of choice for early spring is a 5″ swim bait on a 1oz jig head. Trolling is also effective this time of year and on days when my customers can’t cast well we troll. The last few days the big striper have been on a tear and we have been releasing many over 20″ fish on recent trips.
Remember limit on Lake Texoma striper is 10 fish per person but only 2 of those 10 can be 20 inches or longer. The good box fish will turn on as it warms up a little more but for now we will enjoy catching lots of big Texoma stripers.
The 4th Annual Lake Texoma Burning of the Socks and Switch for Flip Flops
will be held March 16, 2019. This unique event invites everyone out to
various marinas and resorts around the lake as mariners welcome the arrival of
spring. This is a Lake Texoma tradition that you won’t want to
miss!
Legend has it that the manager of the Annapolis Yacht Yard, Captain Bob Turner, decided as he was leaving work on the first day of spring, to burn his socks. Over the years, the tradition has expanded along the east and west coasts and in between.
What began in the 1970’s by east coast mariners has come to Lake Texoma. Terri Weir, Association Director of the Lake Texoma Association, brought the idea to Lake Texoma in 2015. From only a few participants that first year, the event continues to grow with more Lake Texoma Marinas participating and more activities being added each year.
Mariners all over the country will be holding sock burning events to shed heavy winter wear for summer attire. In Texoma Flip Flop season begins with the week of the Spring Equinox which marks the moment when the center of the sun appears directly overhead at the Equator.
The Lake Texoma Burning of the Socks Switch to Flip Flops Celebration will be a day full of family friendly fun. Along with the burning of the socks there will be lots of other fun events.
