Austin College 170th Year to See Record-Sized Class

Austin College 170th Year to See Record-Sized Class

Austin College | Sherman Texas

Austin College faculty, administrators, and student leaders are prepared to welcome nearly 440 new freshmen—the largest class in college history—to campus Friday, August 17, in preparation for the start of the 170th year of the college. New student and transfer orientation will continue over the next several days, and returning students will make their way to campus next Tuesday and Wednesday.

President Steven P. O’Day is looking forward to students’ arrivals and the beginning of Fall Term 2018. He assumed the presidency at the college on October 31, 2017, and says he is enjoying his first experience of Austin College Opening of School traditions. He and his wife, Cece, plan to be out on campus Friday to welcome students and their families as they arrive for residence hall move-in and orientation activities.Opening of School Austin College

The day also will include completion of required forms and gathering of necessary   schedules and instructions, while leaving time to put rooms in order and perhaps visit area retailers to stock up on snacks, toiletries, and other last-minute items.

Saturday morning, the New Student Conference schedule will begin in earnest, with an official Welcome including greetings and guidance from President O’Day, student body president senior Clarissa Caballero Pinedo, and campus administrators. The session will be followed by residence hall meetings, freshman seminar gatherings with classmates and faculty, various Student Life orientation sessions, and to end the day, a comedy entertainer.

The closing session for parents and families on Sunday will end their activities on campus and leave the freshmen to settle in on their own. A number of activities will remain for freshmen and transfer students to continue their preparation for the beginning of classes, including sessions on Academic Integrity, guidance on successful academic progress and residence hall adjustments from returning students, and the “First We Serve” volunteer project that Austin College freshman students have completed together the past several years, assembling nutritious food packets for shipment to those in need through the nonprofit Kids Against Hunger.

The academic year officially will get underway with the traditional Opening of School Convocation in Wynne Chapel Wednesday, August 22, at 7 p.m. The event begins with the entrance of the new students and then the procession of rising seniors in caps and gowns for the first time and the college faculty in full academic regalia. David Baker, professor of physics, serves as College marshal and leads the procession carrying the official college mace.

President O’Day will present the opening address at the event that also includes performances by the A Cappella Choir, led by choral director Wayne Crannell of the music faculty; the official Investiture of the Class of 2022 and presentation of the class banner to students; students’ presentation of the class Academic Integrity book to President O’Day; and prayers for the new academic year.

Children’s Museum Plans Three Fundraisers for September

August 11, 2018 | Commerce, TX

Chico’s in Rockwall partners with Charles Schwab & Co. -Greenville Independent Branch and Children’s Museum

After a summer that included over 7,500 visitors to the Children’s Museum, September will be a month of fundraisers for the local tourist attraction. The children are back in school, and major fundraisers will be the focus for the Children’s Museum.

Whether your interest is ladies’ fashions, a return on your donation, or a new car, the Children’s Museum has a fundraiser for you!

An exciting new fundraiser will be a Chico’s Style Show and Luncheon on September 14 from 12:00 to 1:30 at First Baptist Church in Commerce.  The fundraiser is sponsored by Charles Schwab & Co., – Greenville Independent Branch and Chico’s in Rockwall is coordinating the event.  “I have brought my grandson to the Children’s Museum for many years.  We just wanted to give something back,” said Millie Cundy from the Chico’s in Rockwall. Music for the style show will be provided by Marinell Turnage of Dallas; lunch will be provided by Webb Hill Country Club. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased by calling the Northeast Texas Children’s Museum at 903-886-6055.  Models include Jency Holbert, Brenda Estes, Leslie Killgore, Sarah Alderman, Mary Hendrix, Janet Peek, Gloria Matthews, Bonnie Hunter, Bethany Farmer, Enola Gay, Alicia Wittkof, and Kelsi Mahan.  Servers for the event are Wyman Williams, Gary Rusch, Darrek Ferrell, Charlie Alderman, Sam Walker, John Weatherford, and Gil Naizer.

North Texas Giving Day will be September 20, and it will be the fourth year for participation by the Northeast Texas Children’s Museum.  The day is an online giving event sponsored by the Communities Foundation of Texas.  Last year Communities Foundation of Texas added 2.85% to each donor’s gift. Although online giving begins at 6:00 AM on September 20, donors can bring donations to the Children’s Museum throughout the week.  Online giving donors may go to NorthTexasGivingDay.org. Amounts begin at $25.

So how would you like to win a new car?  Thanks to Britain Chevrolet in Greenville, the Children’s Museum is one of several non-profits participating in a chance for a new car.  Chance tickets are $2.00 and the drawing for the winner will be on December 17, 2018.  Money from the chance tickets are a donation to the Children’s Museum; Britain Chevrolet gets the publicity, and someone wins a new car. Chance tickets are now available at the Children’s Museum; chances will also be available at the Bois d’arc Bash. “I will be at the Bois d’Arc Bash with chances to win a car.  It would be so exciting if someone who got their chance from the Children’s Museum was the winner of the new Chevy Cruze,” said Leslie Killgore.  The winner will have the opportunity to pay for an upgrade on the car.

“We hope our supporters will participate at some level to help the Children’s Museum move into a stable future.  From a $2 chance on a car to a $35 ticket for the Chico’s Style Show to a larger donation on North Texas Giving Day, we need your participation,” said Sharline Freeman, Executive Director of the Children’s Museum. Call the Children’s Museum at 903-886-6055 with any questions concerning the September fundraisers.
